Materialism is a philosophical position, affirming that nothing exists beyond “matter”, that which we can experience with our senses. I would say that science is methodologically materialist: it can deal only with the world of matter. But is not philosophically materialist; it does not imply that nothing can exist beyond what we experience beyond our senses, as religion require. One can accept scientific principles and also hold religious beliefs.
Il materialismo è una posizione filosofica; essa afferma che nulla esiste all’infuori della materia, cioè di ciò che può essere oggetto di esperienza sensibile. Io direi che la scienza è metodologicamente materialista: può trattare unicamente il mondo materiale. Ma non è filosoficamente materialista; non afferma che nulla possa esistere al di là della nostra esperienza sensibile, come richiede la religione. Si possono accettare i principi scientifici e, allo stesso tempo, mentenere le credenze religiose.
